Where to Put Dog Bowls

There are actually different factors to consider when figuring out where to feed your dog. So to help you out, here are the different tips on where to place your dog’s bowls.

1. NOT In the Kitchen Or Outside

If there are places to feed your dog, there are places to NOT feed them, too!

While it may seem ideal to feed them in the kitchen, it’s actually not recommended because of the risk of contamination. There are germs around the kitchen and you wouldn’t want your dog’s open food bowl with it.

Besides this, you shouldn’t feed them outdoors, as this would welcome unwanted critters to get into their unfinished food. If you do have to feed them outdoors, then make sure that you remove all remaining food and clean the bowl thoroughly after feeding time.

2. Avoid Feeding Near Children Or Other Dogs

Dogs are very territorial, especially when it comes to food. They guard what they have and show aggression while eating, which is why no one should be near them as they eat! Unfortunately, children don’t know that and would want to touch them even as they eat.

That’s why you should ensure that you teach your children not to touch the dog while feeding. Better yet, set up space where your dogs are away from anyone.

If you have more than one dog, it’s best to create a distance between their pet bowls. This prevents them from fighting over their food, which can be dangerous.

3. Designate ONE Specific Feeding Area

Consider an area where you can feed your dog every day and at the same time. If you choose an area that has to be changed every now and then, then it’s best to consider another space.

This is because dogs need routine and rhythm in their life and would be confused if things change. So when setting up space, know that this WILL be the area they’ll feed on for a long period and that you’ll also need to set up the following:

  • Clean water bowl
  • Space for the food bowl
  • A mat underneath for easier cleanup

4. Consider the Cleanup and Any Risk of Spilling

If you’re looking for areas where to feed your dog, there are two things to consider:

The Cleanup

Sometimes, dogs tend to eat messily, spilling some food over. Because of that, it’s best to feed them in rooms that have laminated, linoleum, or tiled floors rather than carpeted ones. It’ll be much easier to clean that way.

Risk Of Knocking Over

Avoid placing your bowls in high-traffic areas, since people may knock it over, causing spills and accidents. This just wastes food and adds more time for cleaning up. I’ll mention where the two best places to feed a dog are in the next section!

5. Near Their Crate or Mudrooms

While it’s recommended NOT to place the bowls in the kitchen, it’s best to feed them in other places like:

The Crate

For those who crate train their dogs, it’s best to feed them nearby to encourage them to adapt to their home. It also gives them more confidence and comfort of the crate, having them want to stay within the area. Furthermore, it will be easier to clean up since you only had to maintain one area.

The Laundry or Mudroom

If you don’t crate train your dog, then consider placing the bowl in these areas. Not only does it separate them from the children or dogs, but it’s also easier to clean.
